The sewing table · one bobbin per week
Every week holds a fixed amount of thread. Side work winds onto what's left.
Bobbin Row is a small reference for people adding a second, smaller income to a full-time job. We don't sell courses, tools or coaching. A bobbin only holds so much: wind too much on and the thread tangles or snaps. We look at how much of each week your job and home already use, and how to wind side work on without filling every bobbin to the edge.
The row
Three bobbins with slack. One wound to the edge.
The darker thread is what the job and home use each week; it's mostly fixed. The lighter layer is side work. In the first three weeks there's still slack on every bobbin, room for a late shift or a bad night's sleep.
In week four, a bigger side job pushed the bobbin past the safe line. Nothing went wrong that week, but nothing could have. Seeing the row a month at a time makes it easier to say no to the extra layer before it's wound on.
Thread weights
How much thread different side work tends to use.
Some work winds on evenly and lightly; some arrives in thick, uneven layers. We leave pay out on purpose: rates vary too much by country and platform to print honestly.
| Work | Thread weight | Winds on | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simple online tasks | Fine | Evenly, in short sessions | Low pay per hour after fees |
| Selling things you no longer use | Fine | In bursts at weekends | Time spent on buyer questions |
| Alterations or small repairs | Medium | Job by job | Rush requests before events |
| Freelance writing | Medium | Unevenly, around deadlines | Several deadlines in one week |
| Weekend market stall | Heavy | Whole days at a time | Losing your only rest day |
Tangles
What knots the thread once you start.
- FEES
The rate isn't what arrives.
Platforms and payment services keep a share. Read the fee page before you start.
- TAX
Small amounts still count.
Side income is usually taxable. Keep a plain record from the first payment and check your tax authority's rules.
- FATIGUE
Late nights add up.
Side work that eats into sleep comes back as mistakes at the day job. Protect your rest first.
- CONTRACT
Your employer may have a say.
Some employment contracts limit outside or competing work. Read yours and ask HR about anything unclear.
- FRAUD
Offers that cost you to start.
Anyone asking for a fee, a kit purchase or help moving money isn't offering work. Walk away and report it.
